Depth Estimation from Image Structure

چکیده
ÐIn the absence of cues for absolute depth measurements as binocular disparity, motion, or defocus, the absolute distance between the observer and a scene cannot be measured. The interpretation of shading, edges, and junctions may provide a 3D model of the scene but it will not provide information about the actual ªscaleº of the space. One possible source of information for absolute depth estimation is the image size of known objects. However, object recognition, under unconstrained conditions, remains difficult and unreliable for current computational approaches. Here, we propose a source of information for absolute depth estimation based on the whole scene structure that does not rely on specific objects. We demonstrate that, by recognizing the properties of the structures present in the image, we can infer the scale of the scene and, therefore, its absolute mean depth. We illustrate the interest in computing the mean depth of the scene with application to scene recognition and object detection.

Pose Estimation from a Single Depth Image for Arbitrary Kinematic Skeletons
We present a method for estimating pose information from a single depth image given an arbitrary kinematic structure without prior training. For an arbitrary skeleton and depth image, an evolutionary algorithm is used to find the optimal kinematic configuration to explain the observed image. Results show that our approach can correctly estimate poses of 39 and 78 degree-of-freedom models from a...

متن کاملDense Structure-from-Motion: An Approach Based on Segment Matching
For 3-D video applications, dense depth maps are required. We present a segment-based structure-from-motion technique. After image segmentation, we estimate the motion of each segment. With knowledge of the camera motion, this can be translated into depth. The optimal depth is found by minimizing a suitable error norm, which can handle occlusions as well. This method combines the advantages of ...

With the advent of cheap indoor RGB-D sensors, proper representation of piecewise planar depth images is crucial toward an effective compression method. Although there exist geometrical wavelets for optimal representation of piecewise constant and piecewise linear images (i.e. wedgelets and platelets), an adaptation to piecewise linear fractional functions which correspond to depth variation ov...
